     Analysis of a transcript

This is the analysis of a transcript I wrote with the research of 2 students and a teacher in my school. This was to help me understand the conversational analysis method of spoken discourse.

The conversation between two school boys and a teacher. The conversation that I study first is between Arman and Ryan. Within this conversation, Ryan only has  1 utterance meaning that Arman has more power of the conversation. This is also because there is an adjacency pair, this is because there is a point when there is two speakers which have a natural and logical link to the conversation. You can also breakdown age groups for the boys in the conversation by Ryan saying "oh are ya" and Arman replying "yeah mate". Showing that they could be of a younger age and still at school because it's less informal and more of a joke. Arman also starts the conversation and carries the conversation throughout. From whom the conversation involves it shows the teacher has occupational power showing in theory they should have more power as she has more authority over the student, although from analysis it is clear to me that Arman takes power and is the most dominant character because he has 9 utterances, whereas Mrs Luis has 6 utterances. This is something to be aware of because this is an unusual occurrence as, the teacher is meant to have occupational power, she should have power of the conversation. Which in this circumstance the power has switched and Arman has authority.

Following on from this, I am also aware that there is many occasions where there are adjacency pairs, another example of this is when Arman says to Mrs Luis (speaker B) "so just the word heart" this type of sentence is an interrogative as he is asking a question where speaker B simply replies " no the actual word".

Overall this type of analysis I have found is that this conversation is mix gendered and the exchange structure is simply turn taking as there is no point in this transcript where they speak over each other. This also shows when looking at who dominates the adjacent pairs that Arman is most curious and negotiable with most power because Mrs luis has to answer the questions with a positive face.

  1. A good effort. Don't forget to use the language levels that you have learnt to further develop your analysis. AJK
